DID YOU KNOW?
Kona Coffee is a tradition and an industry unique to the Kona area of the Big Island. Each November, Kona celebrates the harvest of the year’s crop with the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival – a wonderful 10-day program of events that showcases the crop and the history of the people who farm the world-renowned coffee. The first coffee was planted in Kona by missionary Samuel Ruggles around 1828; these first arabica trees were taken from cuttings planted on Oahu a few years earlier. Coffee trees and Kona were a perfect match; the trees thrived in the rich, volcanic soil and perfect climate conditions and were carefully tended by hardworking family farmers. Working the coffee fields is a labor of love as everything, from planting to picking, is done by hand. The early, large coffee plantations soon gave way to smaller, family-run coffee farms. Today there are families – many of them of Japanese ancestry – who are fifth-generation coffee farmers and coffee continues to be one of Kona’s economic mainstays and a highlight of the island’s agricultural industry.
